Frequently Asked Questions.
Is this initiative led by Erebus families?
This initiative includes and is supported by Erebus family members. It also includes members of the wider community.
What is the next step?
It is up to Erebus whanau to decide on the next step. The challenge is that the Ministry told Erebus families that a new site had already been selected. Now, it appears to be doing some limited consultation without providing any real opportunity for the families to be heard. That includes families who want New Zealand’s worst aviation disaster to be commemorated at this site adjacent the Museum of Transport and Technology.
Are you in contact with all Erebus families?
No, because that information is not publicly available. If you are connected to Erebus, we welcome hearing from you so we can incorporate your thoughts, feedback and involvement. contact@EMP.org.nz
Are you speaking on behalf of all Erebus families?
No-one can speak on behalf of all Erebus families. We are proposing this site based on the research outlined in the Boffa Miskell [1] report, and the Colmar Brunton [2] survey. This site meets many of those requirements.

Why is the Ministry for Culture and Heritage opposing a dedicated Erebus Memorial Park, next to the aviation section of the Museum of Transport and Technology?
That is a question for the Ministry. In the past weeks, there has been a suggestion that the proposed site would require some rehabilitation. If the land does need rehabilitation, it presents a positive net outcome for the Erebus story. A site of transformation, and a gift to Auckland which will be the home of the Memorial in perpetuity.
But do the locals want it?
Our team includes Western Springs locals – we welcome it here! It creates a new park for the city. And it has a meaningful connection here at New Zealand’s museum of aviation.
